With a body of just about 407 grams, Canon aimed at users who wanted the quality of a DSLR with interchangeable lenses without the usual bulk of the category. Years later, it still makes a lot of sense as a first DSLR or as a lightweight travel camera.
Under its reduced size, it mounts an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 processor, a combination that offers good image quality and surprisingly usable high ISOs even above ISO 6400. Its 3-inch touchscreen is one of the best of its generation and responds smoothly, and in Live View it debuts the Hybrid CMOS AF II, which focuses fluidly especially with STM lenses.
It is honest to say what it is not for: its 4 fps burst, its 9 AF points through the viewfinder, and the lack of in-body stabilization leave it short for sports or fast wildlife. But as a learning DSLR, for travel, and everyday use with Canon optics, it remains a highly recommended second-hand purchase.

What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 100D?
It uses the Canon EF and EF-S mount, so it accepts EF lenses (full frame) and EF-S lenses (APS-C specific), including third-party ones like Sigma or Tamron with that mount. Being an APS-C sensor, it applies a 1.6× crop factor. It does not natively mount RF or EF-M lenses. For smoother focusing in video and Live View, it is advisable to prioritize STM lenses. Is it good for starting in photography?
Yes, it is one of the best entry-level options. Its reduced and lightweight size makes it easy to carry always, the touchscreen makes handling very intuitive, and the 18 MP with usable high ISOs give results more than enough to learn. Also, since it accepts EF/EF-S lenses, you can gradually expand your gear.
Is it suitable for video recording?
It records Full HD 1080p at 30/25/24 fps and 720p at 60/50 fps. It stands out for including an external microphone input, something rare in its range, and for its Hybrid CMOS AF II, which is notably smoother with STM lenses. With non-STM lenses, video focusing is slower and noisier. Note that it has no in-body stabilization.
How long does the battery last and how is it charged?
It uses a battery Canon LP-E12, small, with a CIPA autonomy of about 380 shots per charge, so it is advisable to carry a spare. Important: it does not support USB charging, it needs its dedicated charger. When buying it second-hand, confirm that it includes the charger and at least one battery with acceptable health (generic ones are cheap).
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
Three specific points of this model: the grip rubber, which in this series tends to peel off or become sticky over time (inspect the edges of the grip); the shutter count, which you should ask for; and that it fires correctly, since there are isolated reports of shutter failure. Also check the touchscreen response and sensor cleanliness.
Does it have image stabilization?
It does not incorporate in-body stabilization (IBIS). Stabilization depends exclusively on the lens, that is, on Canon lenses with IS system. Keep this in mind when choosing second-hand lenses if you care about shooting handheld in low light or recording video.
Is it suitable for sports or wildlife photography?
It is not its terrain. Its burst is 4 fps and it only has 9 AF points through the viewfinder (with the central cross-type), which leaves it limited for fast action. It performs much better in portrait, travel, landscape, and everyday use.
