It is the natural step for those coming from a Rebel (xxxD series) or a 60D/70D and looking for a more serious body, with dual dials, joystick, and top LCD panel. In its day, it stood out as one of the most balanced hybrid photo + video DSLRs on the market.
It mounts a 24.2 MP CMOS sensor with DIGIC 6 processor, ISO 100-16000 (expandable to 25600), and burst shooting up to 7 fps. Its great asset is the Dual Pixel CMOS AF: smooth and fast continuous autofocus in Live View and video that was a benchmark in its era, supported by an excellent 3" vari-angle touchscreen. The pentaprism optical viewfinder covers 100% and the viewfinder AF adds 45 points, all cross-type.
It is honest to acknowledge its limitations: it only records Full HD 1080p (no 4K), lacks in-body stabilization, and has a single SD card slot. Even so, with EF/EF-S mount, mic input and headphone output, and a CIPA battery life of ~960 shots, it remains a very sensible second-hand purchase for quality home photo and video.

What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 80D?
It uses the Canon EF mount and accepts both EF-S lenses (designed for APS-C) and EF (full-frame), always applying the 1.6x crop factor. Third-party EF/EF-S mount lenses from Sigma or Tamron also work. What it does NOT accept are EF-M or RF lenses (from Canon mirrorless), which are different and incompatible mounts. Does it record in 4K?
No. The 80D records Full HD 1080p up to 60 fps, but does not offer 4K. That is its biggest shortcoming if your use is modern video. In exchange, its continuous Dual Pixel AF in video remains excellent, and it includes a microphone input and headphone output.
Is it good for beginners?
It is a body designed for the advanced amateur, slightly above a pure entry-level camera. Even so, it is very user-friendly: vari-angle touchscreen, automatic modes, and Live View with smooth autofocus. It is a perfect step up if you already have some foundation or want a camera that will accompany you as you learn.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the LP-E6N (Li-Ion), backward compatible with the LP-E6, the same as many Canon 5D/6D/7D/70D, so replacements are easy to find. Its CIPA battery life is ~960 shots per charge when shooting with the viewfinder, much higher than mirrorless cameras of its era. In video or intensive Live View, it drops significantly because the sensor is always active.
Does it have image stabilization?
No, not in the body (no IBIS). Stabilization depends on the lens, so it is advisable to mount Canon lenses marked as IS. In video, there is a digital software stabilization, but it crops the image and does not replace optical stabilization.
Is it reliable to buy this camera second-hand?
Yes, it is a high-volume model (2016) that is well proven. The shutter is rated at about 100,000 actuations, and the 80D shows the counter in its own menu, so it is easy to verify: a body far from that figure has a lot of life ahead. Always prioritize low shutter count and good shutter condition over minor cosmetic details.
What should I check when buying it used?
Check the shutter count in the menu, that the battery is original and holds good charge, and that the sensor is free of dust spots. Check that the vari-angle screen has no play, that Wi-Fi/NFC pairs well, and that the included lens (usually 18-55 IS STM or 18-135 IS) has IS stabilization and works smoothly.
