It is a mid-to-high-end camera aimed at the advanced enthusiast and semi-professional: wildlife, amateur sports, aviation, travel, and portrait, with good video quality.
Its main asset is the 32.5-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, the highest resolution in its category from Canon at launch, combined with a DIGIC 8 processor. With the 1.6x crop factor and that level of detail, it is especially attractive for telephoto: lots of effective reach and plenty of room to crop. It shoots at 10 fps with the optical viewfinder (and up to ~11 fps in Live View), records uncropped 4K UHD, and its CIPA battery life is around 1300 shots with the optical viewfinder, a very high figure for its category.
Buying a 90D today means betting on a mature but frozen EF/EF-S system (no new EF-S lenses will come), in exchange for a huge catalog of affordable used lenses and a robust, sealed body with a large, bright optical viewfinder. Honest about its limitations, it remains a very capable tool.

What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 90D?
It mounts Canon EF-S lenses (designed for APS-C) and also all EF full-frame lenses, applying the 1.6x crop factor (a 50 mm behaves like ~80 mm). It does not accept RF or EF-M lenses. You can see options in Canon EF mount lenses.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the LP-E6N, also compatible with the older LP-E6 and the newer LP-E6NH. CIPA battery life is about 1300 shots with the optical viewfinder, very high for its class, and drops to ~450 in Live View. In video or intensive Live View it runs out sooner, so it is advisable to have a spare original battery.
Is it good for video?
Yes. It records uncropped 4K UHD up to 30p using the full sensor width, with very competent Dual Pixel AF, and Full HD up to 120p for slow motion (at 120p focus is manual and without sound). The clip limit is 29 min 59 s due to regulations, not temperature. It has no IBIS: optical stabilization depends on the lens.
Is it good for beginners?
It is capable, but aimed at the advanced enthusiast. The 32.5 MP on APS-C demands good lenses and good technique to extract the detail, and the coverage of the 45 AF points in the viewfinder is clustered toward the center. If you want to learn with room to grow, it works; if you want something purely simple, consider more basic models.
Is it reliable bought second-hand?
Yes, it has no documented design flaw beyond normal wear. Canon estimates the shutter life at 120,000 actuations and there are units that far exceed that figure. It is a robust body with environmental sealing; the key is the condition and use of the specific unit.
How do I check the shutter count?
The 90D does not show the shutter count in its menu; it is read with external software or services from an image file. Ask the seller for it or buy with the possibility of checking it. It is an indicative figure of wear, not a guarantee by itself.
What should I check when buying a used unit?
Check sensor dust (photo of a white wall at f/16–f/22), focus with several lenses, all buttons and dials, the screen articulation, and startup. Confirm that the battery is original Canon (clones can fail) and do a several-minute 4K recording to rule out abnormal shutdowns.
