It mounts a full-frame CMOS sensor of 30.3 megapixels with Dual Pixel technology, from the same lineage as the EOS 5D Mark IV, governed by the DIGIC 8 processor. That translates into image quality that, years later, remains very competitive: good dynamic range, native ISO up to 40,000 (expandable) and the usual Canon color.
It is a camera designed for the enthusiast or professional stills photographer —portrait, landscape, street, travel, some studio— who values ergonomics, a large and sharp OLED viewfinder and reliable Dual Pixel autofocus with face and eye detection. Its fully articulated screen and the open door to the huge EF lens park via adapter make it a very affordable system to build second-hand. As a first generation, it has honest concessions: a single card slot, no in-body stabilization (IBIS) and cropped 4K. Knowing them, it is a very interesting entry into Canon's modern full-frame at a reasonable price.

What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS R?
It uses the RF mount, so it directly mounts any Canon RF mount lens with the best results. Additionally, with the EF-EOS R adapter it accepts the entire catalog of Canon EF and EF-S lenses with full AF (EF-S ones crop to APS-C). It does not accept EF-M lenses from the Canon M series or other brands without a specific adapter.
Is it suitable for 4K video?
It records 4K UHD up to 30p and Full HD up to 60p, with microphone and headphone jacks. But 4K is captured with a crop of approximately 1.7-1.8x and with line-skipping, so you lose wide angle and some sharpness. It is fine for occasional video; if your main use is demanding video, this is not the camera for you.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the LP-E6N battery, also compatible with the LP-E6 and the newer LP-E6NH. CIPA autonomy is modest: around 370 shots with the screen and slightly less with the electronic viewfinder, so in real use it is advisable to carry 2 or 3 batteries. It can be powered and charged via USB.
Is it good for someone starting in full-frame?
Yes, it is a very reasonable entry into Canon's full-frame: a very capable 30 MP sensor, intuitive ergonomics and reliable AF for stills. Keep in mind that it has no in-body stabilization (you depend on lens IS) nor built-in flash, and that instead of an AF joystick it incorporates a touch bar (M-Fn bar) that is not to everyone's taste.
Is it reliable bought second-hand?
It is a well-built body, with dust and moisture resistant sealing. Canon does not publish an official shutter durability figure for this model, so any number you see is indicative. Being from 2018, it is worth assessing general wear. It is a solid purchase if you assume its first-generation limits: single card slot, no IBIS and cropped 4K.
What should I check before buying it?
Ask for the shutter count to assess wear. Confirm if it includes the EF-EOS R adapter, as it has a separate cost. Check that the battery is original Canon and in good health, that the M-Fn bar and touchscreen respond, and inspect the sensor for dust, fungus or scratches. Also verify that the firmware is updated (Canon improved AF and eye detection with updates) and the condition of the sealing gaskets.
Why does it only have one card slot and why does it matter?
Being first generation, the EOS R has a single SD slot (UHS-II), without the possibility of simultaneous backup on a second card. It is one of its most repeated criticisms and the reason why many professionals who require dual slots discard it. No firmware can change that. For enthusiast or studio photography it is usually not a problem.
