What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS R7?
It uses the Canon RF mount. It natively accepts Canon RF mount lenses and the RF-S designed for APS-C. It also supports EF and EF-S lenses from older DSLRs via the Canon EF-EOS R adapter, with full autofocus. Important: it does NOT accept EF-M lenses from the defunct EOS M series. Note that the native RF-S lens lineup is scarce, so budget for lens costs separate from the body.
What battery does it use and how much battery life does it have?
It uses the LP-E6NH battery (2130 mAh) and is backward compatible with older LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries, which yield somewhat less. It charges via USB-C in the camera itself with the PD-E1 adapter. According to CIPA data, it ranges around 500-660 shots with the screen and about 380 with the viewfinder, figures that vary greatly with use. When purchasing, confirm the battery is genuine LP-E6NH and measures well.
Is it suitable for video?
Yes, as a mid-range hybrid with reservations. It records 4K UHD up to 30p oversampled from ~7K (maximum quality, no crop), 4K up to 60p with sensor crop, and Full HD at 120p, with Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ. The weak point is the noticeable rolling shutter in oversampled 4K ("jello" effect in fast pans) and a video AF less reliable than photo AF in low light. There are recurring reports in owner forums about mechanical shutter failures; this is anecdotal information, not an officially recognized defect by Canon, but it is mentioned enough to ask about the history and test it. It is reassuring to know that the electronic shutter (up to 30 fps and 1/16000 s) works as a backup. Canon does not publish an official shutter durability figure, so assess mainly the condition and previous use of the body.
What should I check when buying it used?
Test both shutters (mechanical and electronic) and the IBIS. Check the sensor with a photo at f/16 over a bright surface to rule out dust, common when used outdoors. Check both SD slots, the grip rubber, and that included lenses are RF, RF-S, EF, or EF-S, never EF-M (incompatible). The shutter count does not appear in the menu: it must be read with third-party software or EOS Utility.
What does the AF joystick embedded in the rear dial mean?
It is a common design complaint across all R7s, not a defect of a specific unit. The joystick to move the focus point is integrated inside the rear control dial, and moving it easily brushes the dial and changes exposure unintentionally. It does not affect performance, but it is worth testing to see if it bothers you depending on your shooting style.
