Nikon's move was clear: it put the same 20.9 MP APS-C CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 processor from the D500 into a lighter, sealed, and more affordable body. What does it let you do? Shoot bursts at 8 fps with good buffer, shoot confidently in difficult light thanks to its excellent high-ISO performance, record in 4K UHD, and compose through an optical pentaprism viewfinder with 100% coverage. The touchscreen and tilting screen and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi (SnapBridge) connectivity modernize the experience compared to the D7200.

What lenses are compatible with the Nikon D7500?
It uses the Nikon F mount in DX format and accepts interchangeable lenses. The critical point: the D7500 has no focus motor in the body, so it only autofocuses with AF-S, AF-I, or AF-P lenses (motor in the lens itself). Old screw-drive AF and AF-D lenses mount but only focus manually. You can see options in our collection of Nikon F mount lenses.
Is it suitable for someone starting out?
Yes, although it is a mid-to-high-end camera designed for the enthusiast who wants to grow. It has automatic modes and a touchscreen, but it really shines in manual and burst mode. If it is your first DSLR and you are looking for speed and high-ISO quality, it is a great base that you will not outgrow quickly.
How is the video? Does it record in 4K?
It records 4K UHD (3840×2160) at 30/25/24p and Full HD 1080p up to 60p. Note that 4K applies an additional crop on the DX sensor, so you lose some angle. It has no in-body stabilization, so for handheld video, a VR lens or an external stabilizer is advisable.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the EN-EL15a (compatible with EN-EL15 and EN-EL15b). CIPA battery life is ~950 shots per charge using the optical viewfinder, and in real burst use it usually performs much better. In Live View and video, consumption increases notably. Note: it does not support a vertical grip, neither Nikon nor third-party.
Is it reliable to buy second-hand?
It is a robust and weather-sealed body, with a shutter rated at ~150,000 cycles. Like any used DSLR, it is sensible to check the shutter count, inspect the sensor condition, and confirm the firmware is up to date. Well cared for, it will last years of demanding use.
What should I specifically check when buying it used?
Ask for the shutter count and negotiate if it is close to 150,000 cycles. Take a photo of a white wall or sky at f/16-22 to detect dust or spots on the sensor. Check that the SD card goes in and out cleanly (some users report the slot can catch it if not aligned). And confirm that the kit lens, if included, is AF-P or AF-S so it autofocuses.
Why does it have 20 MP if the D7200 had 24?
It is a design decision by Nikon, not a defect. By using the 20.9 MP sensor from the D500, the D7500 gains high-ISO performance and readout speed (better burst and 4K). For the vast majority of uses, the resolution difference compared to 24 MP is irrelevant; the speed-ISO balance more than compensates.
