Note an important nuance for Fuji fans: its sensor is standard Bayer, not X-Trans, so the distinctive "look" of the X-Pro or X100 doesn't carry over here as such, although it does retain the famous film simulations (including ACROS) and JPEGs with character. It's a camera designed for street photography, travel, and everyday use, for those who want to shoot in "point-and-shoot" mode without carrying a full kit. Its single 28mm focal length forces you to compose with your feet, and its autofocus isn't fast, so it's not a tool for action, sports, wildlife, or fast-AF portraiture. Can I change the lens or attach a telephoto lens?
No. The XF10 has a fixed lens, an 18.5mm f/2.8 Fujinon (28mm equivalent) that cannot be removed or changed. There's no zoom: to get closer or farther away, you have to move yourself. It's part of its street-compact philosophy, so it's worth being clear about this before buying.
What battery does it use, and how much battery life does it have?
It uses the Fujifilm NP-95, the same one as the X70, X100/X100S/X100T, and several FinePix models, so it's easy to find and there are cheap third-party versions. CIPA battery life is around 330 shots per charge. It charges via the body itself over USB, which is convenient for travel, although for long days it's worth carrying a spare battery.
Is it good for recording video?
Only in a limited way. Although it's listed as 4K, it only records at 15 fps, which makes it practically useless for real video. What's usable is Full HD 1080p up to 60p. It also has no stabilization, so if video is your priority, this isn't the right camera: it's a photo camera first and foremost.
Is it good for getting started in photography?
It can be if you're looking to learn composition and framing with a fixed focal length and you value image quality and portability. But its slow autofocus and lack of stabilization and viewfinder make it less forgiving than other cameras for beginners. It's more of a lightweight second camera for someone who already knows what they want: a discreet 28mm for street and travel.
Why is there so much talk about its autofocus?
Because it's its weak point, acknowledged by every review. The contrast-detect AF is slow, tends to hunt back and forth even in good light, and fails indoors or in low light. It's not suitable for moving subjects. It's not a defect of a particular unit: it's how the model behaves from the factory. If the price reflects this limitation, it's still a great compact for static scenes.
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
Since the lens is fixed and its group moves when focusing, check that no dust or sand has gotten in and that the mechanism doesn't scrape or sound strange (a damaged lens makes the camera useless). Test that the AF locks on at various distances even if it's slow, that the touchscreen responds well, that it charges correctly via USB, and that the firmware is up to date. A photo of a wall or uniform sky at f/16 helps detect dead pixels or sensor spots.
Does it have a viewfinder and a tilting screen?
No to both. The XF10 has no viewfinder (neither optical nor electronic), and its 3-inch screen is touch-sensitive but fixed, not tilting. This means composing in bright sunlight or at very low or high angles can be uncomfortable. It's a common compromise in such small compacts, but it's worth knowing if you often shoot in those situations.
