About this unit

The Sony Alpha A7 IV (ILCE-7M4), announced in October 2021, is the fourth generation of Sony's "standard" A7 series and marked a change of direction compared to its predecessor, the A7 III. Sony moved it out of the purely "entry-level" full-frame segment: it increased resolution to 33 MP, incorporated internal 10-bit video, and positioned it as a true photo/video hybrid for advanced enthusiasts and professionals.

It mounts a 33 MP full-frame BSI-CMOS sensor with a BIONZ XR processor, 5-axis in-body stabilization, autofocus with subject recognition (eye/face/body, for people, animals, and birds), and a fully articulating screen, useful for video and content creators. It has interchangeable lenses with a Sony E mount, so it grows with you through lenses.

Who is it for? For someone who wants a single camera that can shoot weddings, portraits, travel, street, and video competently. It is not the most action-oriented option for burst at maximum quality, nor does it record 4K/60p without crop, but as a versatile tool with outstanding image quality, it remains one of the most balanced full-frame options on the second-hand market.

· Frequently asked questions ·
What lenses are compatible with the Sony A7 IV?

It uses the Sony E mount (full-frame format, "FE"). It accepts the huge catalog of Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, and others, as well as APS-C E-mount lenses (with crop). You can see our catalog of Sony E-mount lenses. With an adapter, it can also mount lenses from other brands, though third-party autofocus may vary.

Is it good for starting in full-frame?

It is an excellent camera, but it is not the "cheap" one in the range: Sony raised its price and resolution compared to the A7 III to position it as an advanced hybrid. If you come from mobile or APS-C, it will last you years, although its menus are very powerful and can be overwhelming at first due to the enormous customization.

What can it record in video?

It records 4K/30p at full frame (oversampled, with good detail) and internal 10-bit 4:2:2 with S-Log3/S-Cinetone. Note an important nuance: 4K/60p only works with APS-C crop (~1.5x), so you lose wide angle. It does not offer RAW video output and has noticeable rolling shutter with fast subjects.

How is the burst for action photography?

It reaches 10 fps, and sustains that rate with compressed or lossless compressed RAW. Uncompressed RAW reduces the burst (around 6 fps), and in practice the buffer and card write speed also influence: with SD cards the sustained rate is lower than with CFexpress Type A, which are faster but expensive. For demanding action at maximum quality, it is worth keeping in mind.

What battery does it use and how long does it last?

It uses the NP-FZ100, Sony's large battery, with a CIPA rating of about 580 shots with the screen (~520 with the viewfinder), which in real photography use is usually exceeded. It is an expensive battery to replace, so when buying used, it is advisable to verify its health and cycles, and confirm that it includes an original battery and charging cable.

Is it reliable to buy it second-hand?

Yes, it is a robust and very widespread camera. Being mirrorless, many shots are taken with the electronic shutter without mechanical wear, so a high shutter count weighs less than in a DSLR; even so, always ask for the number. It is worth asking about the firmware version (Sony published autofocus improvements) and about intensive long video use, as it can overheat during prolonged recordings.

What should I check before buying it?

Check the articulating screen (hinge and glass), test the sensor with a photo of the sky at f/16 to detect dust, and inspect the shutter blades (this camera closes it when turned off). Verify the condition of the NP-FZ100 battery and confirm the accessories: battery, charger/USB cable, and cap. Also ask about the firmware version to ensure the best focusing performance.

To complete it, take a look at replacement batteries, memory cards, or camera bags.
