What lenses are compatible with the Sony A7 III?
It uses the Sony E-mount and supports interchangeable lenses. Recommended are Sony E-mount lenses in FE (full-frame) version, which take full advantage of the sensor, Eye AF, and IBIS. APS-C E-mount lenses mount but activate an automatic 1.5x crop (dropping from 24.2 to ~10 MP). Sony A-mount lenses require an LA-EA3/EA4/EA5 adapter.
Is it suitable for beginners?
It delivers excellent results from day one in auto or semi-auto modes, but it's a high-end camera with a dense menu system and a learning curve. If you're looking for your first full-frame and want to grow, it's a great choice; just spend some time configuring the menus to your liking.
How does it handle video?
Very well for enthusiast level: 4K/24p oversampled from a 6K readout of the full sensor (very detailed), 4K/30p with crop, and Full HD up to 120 fps for slow motion. Includes S-Log2/S-Log3 profiles. Its real limitation is that it records only 8-bit (no internal 10-bit), which restricts Log flexibility in post-production, and video AF is less intuitive than Canon's Dual Pixel.
How is the battery and battery life?
It uses the new-generation NP-FZ100 battery, with CIPA battery life of up to 710 shots with the screen and 610 with the viewfinder: among the best mirrorless at its launch. In real use, it typically ranges 450–720 shots depending on temperature and video use. Confirm the battery is original and healthy; third-party ones are a known risk.
Is it reliable to buy used?
Yes, it's a sensible purchase, but do your homework. The shutter has an estimated durability of about 200,000 actuations (manufacturer's statistical average, not a guarantee), and there were lawsuits in the U.S. over shutter failures, some below that figure. Always ask for the shutter count and test shooting at various speeds, checking for black bands or half exposures, a classic symptom of a damaged shutter.
What should I check when buying it used?
Ask for the shutter count: under 50,000 is excellent, and up to 100,000 is still very safe. Inspect the sensor at f/16 against a bright background for dust spots, check the body, mount, LCD, rubber grips, and buttons, and note that heavy video use doesn't increase the shutter counter. After purchase, update the firmware yourself to the latest version.
Is it good for astrophotography? I've heard about the 'star eater'.
Yes. The 'star eater' issue, which smoothed stars in long exposures, is largely mitigated in the A7 III (only slight smoothing in long exposures, without erasing stars). Combined with its good dynamic range and high ISO performance, it's a valid option for night sky photography.
