Heir to the A7R II and below the later 61 MP A7R IV, it mounts a 42.4 MP full-frame BSI-CMOS sensor capable of offering detail and wide dynamic range (around 14.7 stops at base ISO) that at the time placed it on par with the best full-frame resolution cameras of its generation, such as the Nikon D850. It is a camera designed for those seeking resolution and editing margin: landscape, studio, product, portrait, architecture, artwork reproduction, and commercial work. What stands out for its generation is that it combines those 42 MP with bursts of up to 10 fps and very reliable Eye AF, making it also valid for dynamic portraits. It adds 5-axis IBIS (5.5 stops CIPA), 4K video up to 30p with Log profiles, and a battery NP-FZ100 with great autonomy. It is not, however, a camera oriented toward action or high-demand sports: although its photo AF is competent, continuous tracking is not up to the level of more sporty bodies, tracking is not available in 4K recording, it has a dual SD slot but only one UHS-II, and dense menus. As a second-hand body, it remains a very capable high-resolution tool, with a huge Sony E mount ahead.

What lenses are compatible with the Sony A7R III?
It uses the Sony E full-frame mount (FE) and has interchangeable lenses. It accepts native Sony FE optics and third-party ones like Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, or Zeiss. APS-C E-mount lenses work but crop to Super 35 mode (~18 MP), and with adapters (Metabones, Sigma MC-11) you can mount Canon EF optics or manual mounts with variable autofocus. How long does the battery last?
It uses the NP-FZ100, with about 2.2 times more capacity than the batteries of the previous series. The official CIPA figure is around 650 shots with LCD and 530 with viewfinder, although in real use it is usually exceeded comfortably. You can charge via USB and there is a grip to double autonomy. Beware of counterfeit NP-FZ100 batteries: buy original ones or from a reliable seller.
Is it good for video?
It records 4K (UHD) up to 30p, with full-pixel readout at full width and Super 35 crop option, plus Full HD at 120p for slow motion. It includes Log profiles (S-Log2/S-Log3, HLG) and 8-bit output. Keep in mind two limits: subject tracking is not available in 4K and there may be overheating in long 4K clips. The screen only tilts, it is not flip-out like a vlog type.
Is it a good idea for a beginner?
It is a very high-resolution camera oriented toward deliberate photography (landscape, studio, portrait), not a simple action camera. Its menus are dense and not very intuitive, touch is limited, and a grip is advisable with large optics. If you are starting and want to learn calmly on a tripod or in the studio, it will give you a lot of margin; if you want something agile for sports or wildlife, it is not its terrain.
Is it reliable when bought second-hand?
It is a robust and very capable body that ages well thanks to its sensor and dynamic range. The points to watch are shutter wear, battery health, and sensor condition. There are reports of shutter failures in buying guides (not an official Sony figure), so it is worth checking the shutter count before deciding.
What should I check before buying a used A7R III?
Ask for the shutter count (Sony does not show it in the menu; it is read by uploading a recent JPEG/RAW to an online EXIF reader): below ~50,000 leaves plenty of use ahead. Check battery health, sensor (dust, fungus, scratches), mount and contacts, seals, and rubber. Confirm that both SD slots work and the firmware is updated. Remember that only one of the two slots is UHS-II.
Are there two versions of the A7R III?
Yes. The original A7R III (2017) has a 3.69 Mdot viewfinder and 1.44 Mdot LCD. The A7R III "A" revision (ILCE-7RM3A, 2021) improves the resolution of the LCD and viewfinder. Confirm with the seller which one you are buying to know exactly which variant you receive.
