With its 20 MP Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, it delivers image quality that, in today's used market, is surprising for its price. It is tiny and light (about 269 g), very easy to use, and has a solid battery life of about 420 shots per charge. Its 3-inch screen tilts 180° upward, convenient for self-portraits or basic vlogging.
It is worth being honest about what it is: 2014 technology designed for casual photography, not for action or professional use. It has no in-body stabilization, no viewfinder (and cannot be added), and its autofocus is only contrast-detection with 25 points, slower in tracking and low light than the A5100 or A6000. Video is limited to Full HD, without 4K or a microphone input. In return, it opens the door to the entire Sony E-mount lens ecosystem, which is vast and inexpensive used. What lenses are compatible with the Sony A5000?
It uses the Sony E mount (APS-C) with interchangeable lenses. It accepts all Sony E optics and third-party ones (Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox, Samyang), full-frame FE lenses mounted directly (with a 1.5x crop), and other mounts with an adapter. You have many options among the Sony E-mount lenses. Remember that, since it has no in-body stabilization, you need lenses with OSS for stabilization.
Does it include a lens or is it body only?
It depends on the sale. The usual kit is with the retractable 16-50 mm OSS, but many are sold as "body only." Always confirm what is included, as it greatly changes the value. The 16-50 is compact and practical, although its retractable mechanism is somewhat delicate.
Is it good for starting in photography?
Yes, it is one of its great strengths. It is light, simple, and has notable APS-C image quality for the price. It is perfect for static photography and learning. If you need fast autofocus for tracking, sports, or very low light, the A5100 or A6000 are clearly superior for a little more money.
Does it record 4K video?
No. Being from 2014, it is limited to Full HD 1080 (60i/24p), without 4K, log profiles, or external microphone input or headphone output. It is fine for home video or basic vlogging, not for demanding production.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the NP-FW50 battery, with a CIPA-rated battery life of about 420 shots per charge, good for its class. It charges via USB inside the camera; many editions did not include a desktop charger, so it is advisable to have a spare battery (generic ones are cheap).
What should I check when buying it used?
Check that it says ILCE-5000 to avoid confusing it with the A5100 (which does have hybrid AF and a touchscreen). Inspect the sensor condition (spots or dust), the tilting screen hinge, the card slot cover, and the general shutter condition. Also confirm that it comes with the NP-FW50 battery and a cable or charger.
Does it have a viewfinder and stabilization?
No to both. It has no electronic viewfinder and cannot be added, so you compose only with the rear screen, which is somewhat inconvenient in bright sunlight. It also has no in-body stabilization (no IBIS): this depends on the lens, so it is advisable to use optics with OSS for low light and handheld video.
